Daily Crypto Briefing - 2026-11-01

Bitcoin held a tight 77,000 to 77,500 dollar range on Saturday and closed October down 7.7%, while Binance froze about 3 billion dollars of a 6.3 billion dollar hack. ETF outflows and Fed hike odds keep risk appetite thin.

Daily Crypto Briefing - 2026-11-01

Good Morning Blocksignal Community,

Executive Summary

Saturday was a quiet tape sitting on top of a loud week. Bitcoin barely moved after Friday's break below $77,000, but the October close came in 7.7% lower, ETF investors pulled $643 million on Friday, and the fallout from the record Binance hack is still the main unresolved risk. Add a hawkish Fed and oil near $113 to $118, and the market has plenty of reasons to stay defensive.

Market action and drivers

Bitcoin spent Saturday in a narrow box between roughly $76,600 and $77,700, with Coinbase showing $77,497 at 8:00 a.m. ET. CryptoTicker puts the Saturday range at 1.36%, a sharp contrast to Friday, which was the widest day of the month at 5.8%. The October close landed at $77,223, down 7.67% from September and the first losing month since June. The weekly low of $76,338 has now held on several tests, while sellers are waiting in the $79,500 to $80,500 band. The Fear & Greed Index sat at 34, still in fear but up from 30 on the two prior days.

Why it matters: a compressed range after a violent move usually means leverage got flushed and nobody wants to chase in either direction. CryptoTicker counts about $1.54 billion in liquidations on Friday alone, so the weekend started with cleaner positioning than the week did.

Derivatives, flows and on-chain

US spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $643.2 million on Friday, the largest daily outflow since June and the end of a four-day inflow streak. IBIT shed $233.7 million, Fidelity's FBTC $201 million and ARKB $129.5 million, which together made up almost 88% of the exit. Spot Ether ETFs lost about $156 million, their fifth straight day of outflows. Over the week, Bitcoin funds ended $202 million in the red, and October as a whole finished about $516 million negative.

Glassnode estimated earlier in the week that the average entry price of US spot ETF holders sits near $81,500, with active investors at about $77,900. With Bitcoin trading below both, a large share of recent buyers are underwater, which is the classic setup for hesitant flows. On the network side, mining difficulty rose 5.54% to 148.36 trillion, the highest since November 2025, a sign that miners are still committing capital despite the price slide.

Binance hack and the freeze race

The event behind Friday's sell-off is still unfolding. Binance was hit late Thursday in what is being described as the largest crypto theft on record, with about $6.3 billion affected. Binance says roughly $3 billion has been frozen on-chain, including more than $2 billion in stablecoins, with Tether freezing about $1.57 billion and Circle another $800 million. TRM Labs and Elliptic link the attack to North Korean actors, and Elliptic estimates attackers still control more than $3 billion that issuers cannot freeze directly.

Binance co-CEO Richard Teng has said the exchange will cover all hacked losses from company funds, and Fundstrat's Sean Farrell does not see a solvency event so far. Withdrawals are being restored in phases after security testing, with a target of Sunday, followed by a first look at reserves and a full proof-of-reserves report on Monday according to one daily digest. Until those milestones are met, the exchange remains the largest single source of headline risk for the sector.

Macro and geopolitics

The macro backdrop turned harder on Friday. September PCE came in at 3.6% year over year, with core at 3.1% and a firmer monthly reading of 0.3%, while third-quarter GDP grew 3.4%. Markets now price a December hike at roughly 76% to above 80%, depending on the source. Fed officials Alberto Musalem and Lorie Logan both argued for further tightening once the post-meeting blackout ended.

Risk assets felt it. The Nasdaq fell 2.86% on Friday, its biggest drop since June, led by a 28.6% collapse in Intel, and Strategy fell about 7.8% after results. In energy, tanker incidents near the Strait of Hormuz kept Brent in a range of roughly $113 to $118 depending on contract, with the December contract expiring Friday and Brent up about 13.6% for October according to FinanceFeeds. Iran's claim of mined routes is disputed by US Central Command, so treat the details with caution.

Adoption and narratives

CFTC Chairman Michael Selig said the Binance incident strengthens the case for offshore exchanges to register with US regulators, an early sign of how the hack could feed the regulatory debate. Separately, Galaxy Research reported that nine hedge funds and banks trimmed about 68,000 BTC of spot ETF exposure between September 2025 and June 2026 based on 13F filings, a reminder that institutional demand has been uneven. On a lighter note, Saturday marked 18 years since the Bitcoin whitepaper was published on October 31, 2008.

Today's Watch

Two dates frame the next 48 hours. Binance's phased withdrawal restart is targeted for Sunday, and a reserves update is expected Monday, so any slip would add pressure. US spot ETF trading resumes Monday, which will show whether Friday's outflow was a one-off reaction to the hack or the start of a trend. Technically, a break below $76,338 would open the 50-week average near $75,700, while reclaiming $79,500 would be the first sign that sellers are losing control. Keep an eye on oil headlines from Hormuz and the next round of Fed commentary.
