Good Morning Blocksignal Community,
Executive Summary
Bitcoin dipped under $80,000 early on Tuesday, October 27, then climbed back to about $80,700 by the evening as US stocks rose into the Federal Reserve decision on Wednesday. Three themes shaped the day: a market that stayed inside its range while waiting for the Fed, a split signal from positioning, with whales on Hyperliquid turning net short while Bitcoin ETFs took in money on Monday, and a steady flow of stablecoin and tokenization approvals that mattered more for the long run than for the price.
Main Briefing
Market action and drivers
Bitcoin opened the day near $79,800, touched a low around $79,420 and recovered to roughly $80,680 in the evening, up about 0.8% on 24 hours and about 2.1% lower on the week. Ether rose about 1.1% to $2,345, Solana gained 0.4% to $101 and XRP added 2.3% to $1.32. Zcash led the large coins with a 6% gain.
The move came with equities, not against them. The S&P 500 rose about 0.6% to roughly 7,720, helped by chip and AI stocks after Anthropic filed to list on Nasdaq. That matters because crypto lagged a rising stock market on Monday, and on Tuesday the two moved together. The technical picture is unchanged. Bitcoin has settled two days in a row below its 50-day average near $80,800, and the range runs from about $79,260 at the bottom to $84,000 at the top. A close above $80,800 would be the first sign that buyers are taking back control.
Derivatives and on-chain
Glassnode reported that Bitcoin whales on Hyperliquid turned net short for the first time since the rally off the June lows. The data do not show position size, so this is a change in direction rather than a measure of conviction. It is still the kind of signal that matters when the price sits just above a support zone.
Across major exchanges, open interest rose 2.3% to about $38.9 billion, and the long to short ratio moved up to 2.43. More leverage is being added on the long side while large traders lean the other way. That mix often leads to sharp moves around a catalyst, and Wednesday's Fed decision is one.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs took in about $110 million on Monday, all of it through BlackRock's IBIT, while Ether funds had outflows. Over the last five sessions Bitcoin funds are still about $115 million lower and Ether funds about $206 million lower. Tuesday's flow figures were not yet available when we wrote this. Strategy bought no Bitcoin in the week to October 25 and spent about $205 million buying back its STRC preferred shares instead, leaving its holdings at roughly 848,500 BTC at an average cost near $75,400. Its share price fell 4.2% on Monday.
Macro and geopolitics
Markets priced about a 90% chance that the Fed holds rates on Wednesday, with a small hike probability of around 7.5% on Polymarket, up from 4.5% a day earlier. The risk sits in the message, not the decision. Inflation is running well above target, and a hawkish hold would keep a December hike in play. The 10-year Treasury yield stood near 4.98%.
Oil remains the main outside pressure. Brent traded around $116, close to six-month highs, with tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz still well below normal. Talks in Tehran produced no concrete result, and mediators including Qatar are pushing for a deal that would reopen the strait in exchange for the US lifting its blockade of Iranian ports. Any progress there would ease the inflation argument that the Fed is working with.
Adoption, industry and regulation
The OCC gave final approval to Ripple National Trust Bank, which will hold reserves for the RLUSD stablecoin. Canada published a draft stablecoin framework for consultation until December 23, with 1:1 reserves, redemption within three business days and a 1% cap on redemption fees. Hong Kong's SFC approved secondary trading of publicly offered tokenized funds on a licensed platform for the first time, and the ECB plans a digital euro pilot in 2027. Taken together, the rules for regulated stablecoins and tokenized assets are getting more concrete in the US, Canada and Asia.
On the product side, Franklin Templeton plans two Bitcoin ETFs with dividend reinvestment features, and tokenized stock deposits on Uniswap passed $300 million. Galaxy Digital shares rose almost 10% after a research note argued that Bitcoin may be in an accumulation zone and that the bear market is largely over. That is one firm's view, and the whale and ETF data above do not yet confirm it.
Narratives and positioning
Sentiment is neutral. The Fear and Greed Index read 48, down from 50 a day earlier, and the market is trading as a range with the Fed as the next trigger. Many altcoins remain beaten down and near key levels, so a break in Bitcoin would likely hit them harder than it hits Bitcoin.
Today's Watch
The Fed announces its decision at 2 p.m. ET, with Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference at 2:30 p.m. ET. The September PCE inflation report follows on October 29, the ECB decides on Thursday and the Bank of Japan on Friday. A large batch of monthly Bitcoin options expires on Deribit at 08:00 GMT on Friday. Token unlocks start today with XPL, about 6.6% of its circulating supply and roughly $23 million. For Bitcoin, the levels are $79,260 to $79,800 below and $80,800, $81,900 and $84,000 above. Also watch whether Tuesday's ETF flows confirm Monday's inflow and whether the Hyperliquid whales stay short through the Fed.
