Good Morning Blocksignal Community,
Executive Summary
Bitcoin had its best session in a week on Wednesday, rising about 2.5% to the mid-$83,000s and briefly printing above $84,000 as a tech-stock rebound pulled risk appetite back into crypto. Three things framed the day: a regulatory milestone with the OCC finalizing its stablecoin rules, Solana's Alpenglow upgrade going live, and an oil market still swinging around $110 that keeps the Federal Reserve's hiking bias alive ahead of next week's meeting.
Market Action and Drivers
Bitcoin traded near $82,700 early Wednesday after an overnight range of $81,273 to $83,249, then pushed higher through the day. Motley Fool put it at about $84,489 in the evening, up 2.4%, while Ted Pillows reported a one-week high of $83,521 in the morning after Tuesday's $83,028 close, the first daily close above the 20-day moving average since October 13. By early Thursday morning in Europe the price had slipped back to roughly $82,750, with a day range of $82,567 to $84,808. Ether gained between 2% and 3% and traded near $2,490 at its peak, lifting ETH/BTC slightly to 0.0295. XRP was the strongest of the large coins, and Solana added roughly 2%.
The driver was equities, not crypto-native demand. The S&P 500, Dow and Nasdaq all closed higher on the day, and Ted Pillows notes that on-chain blockspace demand remains quiet while the rally leans on ETFs, futures and stocks. That matters for durability: a move led by correlated assets can fade as quickly as the tech tape does. Bitcoin has now held above $80,000 for a month and sits roughly 34% below its October 2025 high of $126,080.
Derivatives and Flows
Positioning stayed measured. Nexo's research desk points out that futures open interest rose about 3% against a spot gain of about 2.6%, which suggests little new leverage entered the move. Bitcoin implied volatility slipped back below 40%, and calls dominated options volume on Deribit, with call open interest running about 1.6 times put open interest, although the one-month skew still favors puts.
Fund flows were softer than Monday's headline. Farside data shows US spot bitcoin ETFs took in $23.2 million on Tuesday, down sharply from $526.7 million on Monday, which was the largest daily inflow since September and was driven by $665 million into BlackRock's IBIT. Ether ETFs lost $26.1 million on Tuesday, a fifth straight day of outflows that totals about $389 million since October 14. Wednesday's flow figures were not yet published at the time of writing. In the corporate treasury space, Strategy added 267 bitcoin to reach 848,517 and raised its preferred-stock buyback authorization to $3 billion, and its shares rose 4.9%.
Macro and Geopolitics
Oil remains the swing factor. Brent touched $111.99 on Tuesday, settled at $108.79 and traded near $110 on Wednesday after an unconfirmed report of a Qatari and Pakistani proposal to revive US and Iran talks pulled it back from the highs. As long as energy prices run hot, the Fed's room to ease is limited. The central bank raised rates by a quarter point in September to a 3.75% to 4.00% target range, its first increase in more than three years. CME FedWatch pricing shows less than a one-in-six chance of another hike on October 28 and roughly a 75% chance of a hike by year end.
The rest of the world offered more reasons for caution. UK inflation rose to 3.5% in September from 3.1%, pushing Bank of England easing bets further out. French ten-year yields sit near 4.96%, close to a 2002 high, with the spread to Germany above 150 basis points. In Asia the Kospi recovered 3.3% after Tuesday's 3.7% drop. The dollar index slipped to a three-week low near 101.8, which gave risk assets some room.
Adoption and Industry
Solana's Alpenglow upgrade went live on Wednesday. Nexo describes its target as finality of about 150 milliseconds. Price reaction was modest, with SOL up about 2%, so the market treated it as a delivered milestone rather than a fresh catalyst.
Regulation
The OCC finalized stablecoin rules on Wednesday that implement the GENIUS Act. Motley Fool frames this as a structural positive for programmable chains such as Ethereum and Solana, where most stablecoins are issued. Separately, the comment period for the SEC's proposed Regulation Crypto Assets closed Tuesday with more than 100 submissions. The draft would exempt startup offerings up to $5 million and fundraising offerings up to $75 million for one year, and industry groups are asking for wider safe harbors while a Wall Street trade group wants stronger investor protections.
Narratives and Positioning
The story of the week is a market that wants to go higher but keeps hitting the same ceiling. Nexo notes that Bitcoin has traded between $80,000 and $87,000 for a month and is down about 1% in October, on track to miss its usual October strength for a second year. JPMorgan added to the mood by including bitcoin in its long-term capital market forecasts for the first time, projecting 10% annualized returns with significant volatility. For traders, Ted Pillows marks $84,000 as the line that has not been closed above since October 6, with $87,220 above it, and $79,800 as the floor that would flip the view bearish.
Today's Watch
Tesla and Meta reported after the US close on Wednesday, so the first read on how tech earnings feed into Thursday's tape comes at the open, and SpaceX shares were also moving after its first profit as a listed company. US jobless claims are due today, flash PMIs and the University of Michigan survey on Friday, and nationwide protests are planned in France on Saturday. The Fed's blackout period starts Saturday, followed by the October 27 and 28 FOMC meeting with a decision on October 28 at 2 p.m. Washington time, core PCE on October 29 and ECB and Bank of Japan decisions between October 28 and 30. Until then, the question for bitcoin is whether a daily close above $84,000 can happen without a push from oil or equities.
