Good Morning Blocksignal Community,
Executive Summary
Sunday was a quiet day for bitcoin and a noisy one around it. BTC stayed in a tight band between roughly $80,800 and $82,200 while Wall Street's Friday fear, a $52 million liquidation wave in weekend chip-stock futures, and the departure of the White House's top crypto adviser competed for attention. Underneath, analysts argued about whether $100,000 is still realistic by year-end.
Market Action and Drivers
Bitcoin traded near $81,100 at the end of the Sunday session, up about 0.4% over 24 hours, with a range of $80,823 to $82,178. Ether was weaker at about $2,365, down roughly 2% as it tested the $2,350 to $2,360 support zone. Volume was thin for a weekend. The practical read is that $80,000 to $80,800 is the support area that matters, while $82,000 to $82,600 remains the ceiling bulls have not cleared since last week's CPI shock.
The backdrop was Friday's equity stress. The VIX jumped 21.5% to just under 20 as the S&P 500 fell 1.09%, driven by AI-credit worries and geopolitics. Oil stayed bid after Iran's Revolutionary Guards said two tankers hit mines in the Strait of Hormuz. CoinDesk's analysis of VIX history points to a Monday fade in most comparable Friday spikes (25 of 32 cases since 1990), and bitcoin's calm weekend, with Volmex's BVIV holding just under 40%, is consistent with that. It is a base rate, not a guarantee, and a fresh wave of fear on Monday morning would break the pattern.
Derivatives and Weekend Leverage
Liquidations cooled to about $359 million over 24 hours, roughly 78% of it longs, compared with about $937 million on October 15. ETH took the largest share at about $82 million, BTC about $48 million. That is a much healthier leverage picture than earlier in the week, and it fits the view of Laser Digital's Luca Invernizzi that leverage has largely been flushed out of bitcoin, with funding at or below zero and speculative excess migrating into altcoins.
The more telling episode came late Saturday UTC. About $51.6 million of leveraged positions in chip-stock perpetual futures were force-closed in roughly ten minutes, according to CoinGlass, with the first large SanDisk and Micron sell orders hitting Binance before reaching Hyperliquid. With U.S. markets closed, these contracts had no live share price to anchor to, so traders mostly reacted to each other. The so-what: tokenized and perpetual stock markets are now a real weekend venue, and Monday's open will show how far those prices strayed from reality.
Macro and Outlook
The year-end debate sharpened. Bitwise's Ryan Rasmussen argues bitcoin could finish above $100,000 on ETF and corporate buying, hard-asset demand and clearer regulation. LO:TECH's Adam Morgan McCarthy expects $85,000 to $95,000, and says a move to $100,000 needs rate-hike expectations to give way to a pause as oil and inflation ease. The October 14 CPI print, with headline prices up 0.6% on the month and gasoline accounting for more than half of it, keeps that debate alive. Investment-product flows have slowed after $11.1 billion of inflows since mid-July, which CoinShares reads as uncertainty rather than weaker fundamentals.
Regulation and Security
Patrick Witt, executive director of the President's Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, is leaving government, and no successor has been named. He follows Harry Jung and Bo Hines in a post with heavy turnover. A White House official says crypto and the Clarity Act remain a priority, but with the midterms next month and no hearings tracked for the week, momentum on market structure looks limited. Agency rulemaking at the SEC, CFTC, OCC and Treasury continues regardless.
On security, Hacken's Q3 report counts $1.18 billion stolen across 107 incidents, up 55% from Q2, with about $907 million tied to compromised suppliers, developer tools or unapplied fixes. Its message is that audit badges cover too little: wallets, signing systems and third-party software often sit outside the scope.
Today's Watch
Monday starts with the test of whether Friday's equity fear fades, plus the first read on how Saturday's chip-futures prices compare with real share prices. For bitcoin, the levels are $80,000 on the downside and $82,000 to $82,600 on the upside, with ETH needing to hold $2,350. Scheduled items this week include the SEC comment deadline on its proposed Regulation Crypto Assets framework on October 20, the targeted Solana Alpenglow upgrade and Tesla earnings on October 21, and the FOMC decision on October 27 to 28. Several of these dates are targets rather than confirmed events.
