Daily Crypto Briefing - 2026-10-18

Good Morning Blocksignal Community,

Executive Summary

Saturday was a quiet, range-bound session. Bitcoin sat just under $82,000 with falling volume and no fresh catalyst, the sentiment backdrop stayed cautious after the hot CPI print and the Fed's refusal to signal anything on October, and altcoins mostly drifted lower, with Zcash the loudest laggard. The weekend gave traders time to digest the week rather than a reason to reposition.

Market Action

Bitcoin traded around $81,500 for most of the day, inside a 24-hour range of roughly $81,100 to $81,700, and finished the session slightly lower. That keeps it below the $82,000 level that analysts flagged as the line between a genuine recovery and another failed bounce. A brief poke above it would say little. A hold above it, followed by higher highs, would be the first real sign that buyers are back.

The technical picture is balanced rather than bearish. Price sits under the short-term 10-day and 20-day averages, near $82,300 and $83,400, but above the 50-day averages around $80,400 to $81,300. Bids cluster near $80,000, which is the support that matters, and $84,250 remains the recent rejection level on the upside. Trading volume declined through the day, which fits a market waiting for a trigger.

Ether followed the same pattern at about $2,420, just above the $2,400 level traders are watching. Solana and BNB slipped by roughly 1% each. The total crypto market cap was near $2.84 trillion, and the Fear and Greed Index read 55, a mild greed reading that one market review described as optimism cooling.

Altcoins and Derivatives

Zcash was the standout mover. ZEC traded near $1,170, down about 5.7% on the day, after derivatives liquidations added to pressure from a miner selling borrowed coins to fund expansion. The token is still up more than 500% over twelve months but remains well below its September peak near $1,700.

The bigger story for ZEC is the NU7 network upgrade, which would cut block spacing from 75 to 25 seconds. A testnet review is expected around October 20, with early November discussed as a possible mainnet window. Node operators would need to move to the Zebra client, which is why the upgrade is drawing debate. Separately, Grayscale's Zcash ETF has seen mixed flows, and a competing Winklevoss filing still needs approval.

We could not find reliable Saturday figures for liquidations, open interest or funding, so we are not quoting any. Spot ETFs also do not trade on weekends, so there are no new flow numbers beyond the outflows reported earlier in the week.

Macro and Positioning

The macro backdrop is unchanged from Friday. September CPI came in at 3.7% year over year, the highest since January, with gasoline doing most of the work. Market odds for an October Fed hike have fallen from earlier peaks, but a December move is still priced as a real possibility. Oil and inflation worries are the main reasons risk appetite stays muted, and the Kospi rout and AI-credit stress earlier in the week are still fresh. With US markets closed and no scheduled data, bitcoin has little to react to over the weekend.

On security, reports continue about a roughly $5 million theft linked to tampered Ledger devices, according to Chainalysis. It is a reminder to buy hardware wallets only from the manufacturer.

Today's Watch

Sunday is typically thin, so expect bitcoin to chop between $80,000 and $82,000 unless something breaks the range. A daily close above $82,000 would shift the tone, while a loss of $80,000 opens the door to $79,700 and $78,000. Ether needs to hold $2,400. Into next week, the ZEC testnet review around October 20 and the FOMC meeting on October 27 and 28 are the dates that matter.
