Good Morning Blocksignal Community,
Executive Summary
Friday was a relief day rather than a trend change. Bitcoin climbed back to roughly $82,500 after Thursday's brush with $80,000, because Fed Chair Kevin Warsh declined to hint at another rate hike and the odds of an October move collapsed. Leverage was far lighter than during the CPI sell-off, altcoins outran bitcoin, and yet investment funds kept bleeding money for the week. The market is relieved, not convinced.
Market Action and Drivers
Bitcoin opened Friday near $82,100 and traded around $82,700 by the US morning, up about 2% from Thursday's level of roughly $80,900, according to Fortune and Yahoo Finance. Ether followed with a gain of around 5% on one snapshot to about $2,475, though it is still down roughly 1% on the week. The week's range for bitcoin runs from about $79,800 to $84,350, which means Friday's price sits right in the middle of it.
The catalyst was a speech. Speaking at the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, Warsh said the economy has broadly matched the Fed's expectations since the September hike, but added that he does not prejudge meetings. Markets read the silence as dovish. CME FedWatch put the chance of a 25 basis point hike at the October 27 to 28 meeting at about 15%, down from roughly 27% a day earlier and from a peak of 50% right after Wednesday's hot CPI print. Several officials had already signalled that hikes need not come back to back, and economist Robin Brooks argued that fears of an AI blow-up are helping to keep the Fed cautious. The 10-year Treasury yield hovered near 5.07% after touching 5.13%.
Derivatives and Positioning
The leverage picture explains why the bounce was calm. Total crypto liquidations dropped to about $311 million over 24 hours, compared with nearly $1 billion the day before, and futures volume fell around 20% to $200 billion. Open interest edged up 2% to $142.2 billion, but its growth trailed spot gains for bitcoin, ether and Solana, which suggests the move was not driven mainly by fresh leveraged longs. That is a healthier base than a squeeze, though it also means conviction is thin.
Fund flows tell a more cautious story. CoinShares reported $434 million of net outflows from digital asset investment products for the week, and described a clear deterioration in sentiment since the CPI release. Its head of research called the near-term setup difficult rather than fundamentally bearish. US spot ETF data from Farside showed roughly flat bitcoin products on Thursday at +$5 million and ether products at -$60 million, with Friday's figures still pending when we went to press.
Altcoins and Narratives
Breadth improved noticeably. Roughly four in five assets in a broad crypto index were higher, and CoinMarketCap's Altcoin Season Index rose to 60 from 50. Celestia, Injective and LayerZero were among the leaders, with 24-hour gains that one tracker put between roughly 21% and 31%, although those later readings come from a different snapshot than the early-morning moves. Thursday's data also showed sharp pops in names such as NEAR, PYTH and STRK on exchange listings and community votes. These rotations look driven by thin liquidity and local catalysts, so we treat them as a sentiment gauge rather than a signal.
Macro and Regulation
The macro backdrop remains hawkish underneath the calm. September producer prices rose 1.3% month over month and 6.3% year over year, well above forecasts, and retail sales beat at +0.8%, although excluding gasoline they rose only 0.2%. Brent crude stayed above $106. Equities were mixed: the S&P 500 gained about 0.5% while the Nasdaq slipped, and South Korea's Kospi rebounded 2% to 5,668 but still ended the week down about 8%. Worries about AI financing, including record credit default protection costs at CoreWeave, keep pulling money between sectors.
On the regulatory side, the OCC expects to finalize GENIUS Act rules by the end of October, SEC comments on the proposed Regulation Crypto Assets close on October 20, and the CLARITY Act remains stalled in the Senate. MSCI also adopted new exclusion rules that could put Strategy and Metaplanet at risk of index removal, a story worth following for anyone tracking treasury-company stocks.
Today's Watch
Today is Saturday, so liquidity will be thinner and the Fed enters its pre-meeting quiet period, which removes one source of surprise. Token unlocks for ASTER, CRO and DBR are scheduled, worth roughly $110 million combined. On the chart, a daily close above $84,000 would reopen the upside, while a loss of $79,800 would put the week's low back in play. Next week brings the October 20 SEC comment deadline, and the FOMC decision on October 28 is the next major test, with Strategy's earnings following on October 29.
