Daily Crypto Briefing - 2026-10-07

Bitcoin held a tight $85,500 to $86,400 range on October 6 as US stocks closed at records and the dollar slipped below 102. FinCEN withdrew its $10,000 self-custody reporting proposal, and the Fed minutes land today.

Daily Crypto Briefing - 2026-10-07

Good Morning Blocksignal Community,

Executive Summary

Bitcoin spent Tuesday boxed into a narrow range around $86,000 while equities did the heavy lifting: the S&P 500 posted its first record close in two months. Three things mattered. Falling yields and a softer dollar gave risk assets room without igniting a crypto breakout. Washington took another step toward lighter crypto rules as FinCEN scrapped two long-pending proposals. And Ethereum's Glamsterdam capacity test went live on Sepolia.

Main Briefing

Market action and drivers

Bitcoin traded between roughly $85,500 and $86,400 and ended the day about 0.2% lower on CoinDesk's tally, while CoinGabbar put the 24-hour move at -0.9% near $85,900. Yahoo Finance had it at $86,229 in the morning, up 2.7% on the week and 7.4% on the month, though still about 30% below where it stood a year ago. Ether sat near $2,700 after a mild dip, with one source showing a lower print, so treat the exact level with some caution. Majors barely moved, and the Crypto Fear and Greed Index edged up to 73 from 70.

The backdrop explains the calm. The S&P 500 gained 0.6% to 7,821, the Nasdaq-100 hit a record, and the 10-year Treasury yield eased to about 5.26% from highs above 5.27%. The dollar index slipped under 102, WTI crude fell 2.3% to $87.36, its weakest since late August, and gold gained almost 1% below $4,200. That mix is supportive in principle, yet bitcoin did not follow stocks higher. It is trading as a range asset, and analysts cited by CoinDesk see a break below $84,000 as the bears' signal, with $83,000 as the support to watch and $80,000 as the next target if it fails.

Narratives and positioning

Rotation happened beneath the surface. Smaller altcoins outperformed while bitcoin idled, with Bitway's BTW up about 25% on the day and Zcash leading the majors with a gain of roughly 2% near $1,360. The Winklevoss brothers also filed for a Zcash ETF under the ticker WINK, and Kalshi launched perpetual futures on a US 500 index. When traders reach for small caps and new derivatives wrappers during a flat tape, it usually signals appetite for risk without conviction in the majors.

Regulation

The most consequential headline of the day came from FinCEN, which withdrew two proposals that had hung over the industry for years: the December 2020 rule requiring reporting of transfers above $10,000 to self-hosted wallets, and a 2023 plan to treat crypto mixing as a money-laundering concern. Neither ever took effect, but both were a standing threat to self-custody. The withdrawal fits the administration's push for what it calls fit-for-purpose digital asset rules. Separately, the CFTC allowed exchanges to drop expiry dates on certain securities-index perpetual futures, subject to customer protection requirements through October 20, and Chairman Michael Selig outlined proposed rules on retail intermediaries, asset segregation, reserves and actual delivery, naming bitcoin and ether as commodities.

Adoption and industry

On Ethereum, the Sepolia test of the Glamsterdam upgrade activated at about 13:53 UTC. It lifts the testnet gas limit from 60 million to 200 million, more than three times higher. A last-minute Prysm 7.2.1 release made sure validators scaled to the new limit automatically. The test applies to Sepolia only, and no mainnet date has been announced. Binance also launched Binance Intelligence, a bundle of AI trading and developer tools that it says already sees more than 280,000 daily invocations.

Today's Watch

The FOMC minutes are due on Wednesday and are the main scheduled event. With the 10-year yield still above 5.2%, any detail on how close the Fed came to another hike will move rates and, indirectly, bitcoin. Watch the $84,000 to $83,000 zone on the downside and the recent high near $87,000 on the upside, and keep an eye on how the Glamsterdam test behaves under the higher gas limit.
