Bitcoin pushed to within $500 of its eight-month high near $87,000 on Monday before reversing under $86,000, as a surging dollar and 5.25% yields capped the rally. Ether's Q3 outperformance hides thinning liquidity.

Daily Crypto Briefing - 2026-10-06

Good Morning Blocksignal Community,

Executive Summary

Monday was a story of resistance. Bitcoin ran to within about $500 of its eight-month high near $87,000 and then handed the move back, slipping under $86,000 while the dollar climbed to its strongest level in nearly 18 months. Beneath the price action, Ether's big third quarter turned out to come with thinner liquidity, and the tokenization and treasury trades kept producing headlines: a SPAC tied to an XRP treasury nearly quadrupled, and a new venue plans to put more than 60 US stocks onchain.

Main Briefing

Market action and drivers

Bitcoin climbed to nearly $87,000 in early Monday trading, roughly $500 short of its eight-month high, before reversing to just under $86,000. It was still up about 1.3% on the day. CoinDesk framed it as the second push in a week that stalled below the late-September peak near $87,400; last Wednesday's jump to $85,500 after softer inflation data also faded within hours. The immediate tailwind was Friday's soft jobs report, which eased pressure for another Fed hike, and the 10-year Treasury yield slipped two basis points to 5.25%. Global equities were firm and the Nasdaq 100 closed at a record. Dogecoin led the majors with a gain of more than 3% to just under 10 cents, XRP, BNB and ZEC added 1% to 2%, while Ether and Solana barely moved. The level to watch is a daily close above $87,000, which would show buyers can finally clear the late-September ceiling.

Macro: a strong dollar is the headwind

The more important backdrop is currency and rates. The US Dollar Index rose to about 102.5, its highest in nearly 18 months and up from around 99 in early September. Long-term Treasury yields sit at levels last seen more than two decades ago, helped by the Fed's 25-basis-point hike in September to 3.75%-4% and expectations of further tightening toward 4.5%-4.75% by June 2027. Euro weakness, with the single currency near 1.12 on fiscal worries in France and a snap election in Spain on November 29, adds fuel because the euro makes up more than half of the dollar basket. Bitcoin holding around $86,000 in this environment is a sign of resilience, but a stronger dollar and rising yields remain a real cap on upside.

Ether's catch

Ether rallied about 70% in the third quarter against roughly 42% for Bitcoin, and it trades around $2,695. The catch, per CoinDesk and CoinGecko data, is liquidity: Ether's median daily market depth was only 35% to 45% of Bitcoin's between July 6 and September 30, down from at least 60% a year earlier. Depth within 0.15% of the market price was about $13 million to $14 million. CoinGecko notes that most exchanges still keep more than $1 million on each side, so the market is liquid enough, but thinner books mean the same flows move price more, in both directions.

Adoption and industry

Two stories show how much capital-markets plumbing is moving onchain. OKXICE, a joint venture between OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, the owner of the NYSE, has filed for a 24/7 venue that would offer tokenized versions of more than 60 US stocks, including Nvidia and Tesla, each backed one-for-one by a share held at a registered broker-dealer and traded against stablecoins on XLayer using Uniswap infrastructure. The filing is not yet approved, companies have a 30-day window to object and Cerebras already has, and TD Securities sees limited near-term relevance for institutions. Separately, Armada Acquisition Corp. II, the SPAC merging with XRP treasury company Evernorth, rose about 273% in a week to close Friday at $39.42 against a trust value near $10.50. Roughly 80% of the trust looks set to be redeemed, which shrinks the float and amplifies volatility. Evernorth expects to hold about 473 million XRP at closing, worth around $714 million at $1.51, though earlier purchases at an average of $2.54 are now worth well below cost.

Today's Watch

The Ethereum Glamsterdam upgrade goes live on the Sepolia testnet at 13:53 UTC, a dress rehearsal for mainnet rather than a price catalyst. Eurozone retail sales are due, and Digital Assets Week opens in London. Tomorrow brings the FOMC minutes from the September 15-16 meeting at 2 p.m. ET, the Evernorth merger close is expected, and TOKEN2049 starts in Singapore. Bitcoin's 50-, 100- and 200-day moving averages are converging toward their first fully bullish alignment since 2025, so a close above $87,000 would carry extra weight, while the dollar and yields remain the main risk.
