Daily Crypto Briefing - 2026-10-01

Cooler-than-expected August PCE cut October Fed-hike odds, yet Bitcoin stayed near $83,500 as ETF inflows thinned to $66M and the Bitget reopening continued with USDT withdrawals. September closed as a record month for crypto hacks.

Daily Crypto Briefing - 2026-10-01

Good Morning Blocksignal Community,

Executive Summary

Three things shaped Wednesday. A softer-than-expected August PCE report took pressure off the Federal Reserve and pulled October rate-hike odds down, but crypto barely reacted. Bitcoin finished September almost exactly where it started the day, near $83,500, while the buying power behind spot ETFs faded to its weakest level in over a week. And the Bitget reopening moved into its stablecoin phase, just as CertiK confirmed September as the worst month for hacks and exploits this year.

Market Action & Drivers

Bitcoin opened the day at about $83,625 and traded in a narrow band around $83,400 to $83,770, flat on the day according to Yahoo Finance. Ether sat near $2,677, down 0.4%. Over the month, Bitcoin gained roughly 6.9% and ether about 8.9%, which puts both assets on course for a positive September. Over the past week, however, Bitcoin is down about 3% and ether about 2.8%, because both failed to hold the September 21 highs near $87,400 for Bitcoin. The total crypto market cap was reported around $2.87 trillion with Bitcoin dominance at 58.3%.

The tape looks like consolidation, not conviction. Bitcoin stays above its 20-day average near $81,300 and its 50-day near $77,300, so the broader uptrend is intact. Short-term momentum, though, is neutral to weak. Ether has spent late September between support around $2,620 to $2,660 and resistance around $2,775 to $2,825, and the PCE-driven pop above $2,700 faded within hours.

Macro & Geopolitics

The main macro event was the August PCE release. Headline inflation came in at 3.4% year over year against 3.7% expected, and core PCE at 3.0% against 3.3% expected. Monthly readings of 0.3% and 0.2% were each a tenth below forecasts. After the print, CME FedWatch showed roughly 65% odds of an unchanged rate at the October meeting, up from roughly even odds a day earlier, which implies the chance of another hike dropped to about a third.

The relief has limits. Inflation remains well above the 2% target, the Fed raised rates in September for the first time since 2023, and CNBC reported that the 10-year Treasury yield still moved higher as traders looked past the inflation data and turned toward Friday's jobs report. That explains the muted crypto response: a cooler number lowered the near-term risk of a hike, but it did not remove the high-rate backdrop that has capped risk assets all month.

Derivatives & Flows

Leverage keeps shrinking. Ether open interest fell to 12.49 million ETH, the lowest since March 1, which tells us the market is holding price without adding borrowed exposure. On the Bitcoin side, US spot ETFs recorded a ninth straight day of net inflows on September 29, but the size has collapsed from almost $1 billion on September 21 to $66.2 million. US spot ether ETFs, by contrast, lost $2.8 million that day and ended a seven-day inflow streak, though September as a whole still brought in roughly $892 million, the third positive month in a row. Solana spot ETFs added $5.4 million.

The pattern is consistent: institutions are still buying, but with far less urgency than earlier in the month. Price now depends more on whether that demand re-accelerates than on any new catalyst.

Adoption & Industry

The Bitget recovery reached its next stage. After the exchange's $387.5 million hot-wallet breach on September 24, withdrawals have been restored in phases, with Bitcoin on September 28, ether on September 29 and USDT scheduled for September 30. Data reported ahead of the USDT step showed a record $463 million net outflow over 24 hours as of September 29, while Bitget cites 131% reserve coverage across 19 assets and 107% specifically for USDT. The protection fund fell from $464 million to below $200 million after the incident.

CertiK's monthly tally puts the broader picture in perspective. Crypto platforms and users lost about $766.4 million to exploits and phishing in September, the highest monthly total and incident count of 2026. Bitget and the Liquid Network exploit of September 6, at $318.7 million, together account for more than 92% of that figure. About $270.6 million was returned or frozen, leaving roughly $496 million unrecovered.

Narratives & Positioning

The story of the month is security and trust. Two large incidents in three weeks pushed users toward asking where their assets sit, and the Bitget outflow data shows that question is being answered with withdrawals, not words. That did not produce a market-wide price shock, which suggests the damage stayed contained to the affected venues, but it keeps exchange custody and reserve transparency on the agenda heading into Q4.

Today's Watch

October opens with the market waiting on labor data. The US jobs report on Friday is now the next major test for rate expectations, and after this week's cooler PCE, a strong print could revive hike pricing quickly. Closer to home, Bitget is scheduled to reopen withdrawals for remaining tokens, fiat and P2P on October 2 at 08:00 UTC, so watch whether outflows stay orderly. On the flow side, the first October ETF prints will show whether inflows stabilize near this week's low or keep fading.
