Good Morning Blocksignal Community,
Executive Summary
Sunday's calm gave way to a genuinely interesting Monday: crypto decoupled from a tech-stock selloff triggered by AI safety warnings, Bitcoin pushed back toward $78,000, and prediction markets sharply repriced the odds that Washington's crypto market-structure bill becomes law this year. Underneath the price action, ETF flows told two very different adoption stories β one for majors, one for meme coins β while this week's run of central bank decisions, starting with the Fed on Wednesday, is already shaping positioning.
Market action & drivers
Bitcoin climbed to an intraday $78,280, up roughly 2% on the day, while Ethereum added around 2% to near $2,500 and XRP gained about 3.3%. Of the 100 constituents in the CoinDesk 100 index, 94 moved higher. The move stood out because it happened while equities fell hard: Nasdaq 100 futures dropped roughly 1.5β1.65% in premarket trading, and semiconductor names took the brunt of it, with Nvidia down 2.4%, Intel down 5.6%, and Marvell down 6.3%. South Korea's Kospi fell 3.26% in sympathy.
The trigger was not a crypto headline at all. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argued publicly that AI companies should slow the pace of development of their most capable frontier models on safety grounds, a position OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk both voiced support for. Markets read that as a signal that chip orders and data-center buildout could slow, and cloud and compute-exposed names sold off accordingly β CoreWeave and Cipher Digital each fell about 6% premarket, MARA Holdings dropped 5%, and IREN lost 4% (even as JPMorgan upgraded IREN to overweight on improved contract pricing, lifting its target to $65 from $46).
Crypto simply had no reason to follow. With no negative catalyst of its own, the asset class absorbed capital rotating out of tech. Oil moved the same way for similar reasons, with Brent crude up more than 3% to around $107 a barrel and WTI above $103, while gold and silver actually fell β gold dropped almost 1% to roughly $4,300 an ounce and silver lost 1.5%. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to just under 5%. In other words, this was a rotation story, not a flight-to-safety story, and crypto ended up on the beneficiary side of it alongside energy rather than grouped with equities.
Derivatives & positioning
Futures data pointed to accumulation rather than leverage-driven speculation. Funding rates edged up to around 0.0066% and the long/short ratio sat at 1.15 β elevated but not stretched. That is consistent with spot-led buying rather than a crowded leveraged long trade building up into the Fed decision, which matters given how quickly funding can flip once a rate surprise hits. Separately, HYPE against SOL remained in its broader uptrend after a roughly 25% pullback from its June peak, a setup some traders are watching for a possible reversal β worth noting as a chart pattern, not a signal to act on.
Adoption & industry: two ETF stories
Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw modest, headline-driven outflows rather than a real change in institutional appetite. BlackRock's IBIT recorded its largest single-day redemption of the period on September 11 at $19.2 million β about 0.03% of the fund's $60.6 billion in assets β and the broader US spot Bitcoin ETF category shed roughly $463 million over the four sessions from September 8 to 11. Set against IBIT's roughly $64 billion in cumulative net inflows since its January 2024 launch, this reads as tactical rebalancing ahead of the Fed meeting rather than a loss of conviction.
The more striking adoption story is in altcoin ETFs. Dogecoin funds have taken in just over $12 million combined in nearly ten months of trading, recording net inflows on only 28 of 199 trading days and zero flows at all on 83% of them. Over the same period, XRP ETFs pulled in $1.7 billion and Solana ETFs $1.36 billion β each more than a hundred times DOGE's total. In one especially sharp contrast, XRP funds took in $12.3 million in a single day (September 9), roughly matching DOGE's entire ten-month haul. Bitwise has already moved to close its DOGE ETF after less than a year, citing weak demand, with liquidation expected by October 22. As MyDoge's Jordan Jefferson put it, access was never Dogecoin's real constraint β it already has deep liquidity and distribution, so a wrapper product does not obviously add anything new for holders.
Regulation: Clarity Act odds jump
Prediction markets moved sharply on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act after President Trump reportedly agreed to stricter personal ethics provisions to help move the bill forward. Polymarket's odds of the Act becoming law in 2026 rose to nearly 30%, up from 12% at the start of the month, while Kalshi's odds for passage before October 2027 touched as high as 64% overnight before settling near 53% on Monday morning. The near-term test is a Senate cloture vote requiring 60 votes, expected Tuesday.
Not everyone is convinced this changes the underlying math. TD Cowen policy analyst Jaret Sieberg kept his own estimate at just 25%, arguing moderate Democrats still have limited incentive to support the bill β he pointed to doubts that Trump's blind-trust arrangement fully separates him from the crypto industry, and to state attorneys general having only limited enforcement power over the president. Worth remembering this is a legislative process, not a done deal: passing cloture, surviving amendments, House reconciliation, and a presidential signature are all still separate hurdles even if Tuesday's vote goes well.
Today's Watch
This week is a central-bank week, and it starts in earnest tomorrow. The Federal Reserve announces its rate decision Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. ET, with markets expecting a move to 4.00% from 3.75% alongside updated economic projections and a press conference from Chair Kevin Warsh β worth watching closely given Monday's funding-rate uptick. The Bank of England follows Thursday, expected to hold at 3.75%, and the Bank of Japan closes the week Friday with a forecast hike to 1.25% from 1.00%. U.S. retail sales, import prices, and jobless claims data land alongside the Fed decision and will feed into how the market reads it. And on the legislative side, Tuesday's Senate cloture vote on the Clarity Act is the next real checkpoint for the odds move discussed above β neither the vote nor the Fed decision is a reason to change position size ahead of time; know where your liquidation levels are before Wednesday afternoon.
