Daily Crypto Briefing - 2026-09-06

Good Morning Blocksignal Community,

Executive Summary

Saturday was a session for digesting rather than deciding. Bitcoin spent the day pinned between roughly $79,500 and $80,100 after Friday's strong August payrolls report pushed it back under the round number, while ether firmed slightly and held the relative lead it built over bitcoin during the past month. Zcash consolidated above $1,000 after a week that carried it from a niche privacy bet to the eleventh-largest crypto asset by market value. Away from the tape, two disclosures did more work than the price action: the first quarterly ownership filings for the US Hyperliquid ETFs put UBS, Bank of Montreal and Jane Street on the holder list, and a Bank of Korea study traced a measurable path from stablecoin demand to the exchange rate of the currency used to buy it. Both say the same thing in different registers. The connection between crypto and regulated finance keeps getting shorter, and the second-order effects now show up in data rather than in argument.

Market action and what moved it

Bitcoin held a tight range through the weekend session, trading between about $79,500 and $80,100 and sitting near $79,700 through the Saturday US afternoon. That is roughly 1.4% lower over twenty-four hours and some $2,500 below Thursday's high above $82,000. The cause sits one day back rather than in Saturday itself. August nonfarm payrolls came in at 162,000 against a consensus near 56,000, unemployment held at 4.1% and average hourly earnings rose 3.1% year over year. A labor market that strong argues against near-term easing, and bitcoin gave back its move above $80,000 within hours, taking roughly $295 million in long positions with it.

Ether was the better performer on the day, changing hands near $2,479 in the Saturday afternoon US session, up about 1.3%, inside a narrow $2,445 to $2,483 range on $6.74 billion of volume. Its $302 billion market value keeps it comfortably second and gives it around 10.8% of a total crypto market near $2.7 trillion. The more interesting number is the relative one: ether has gained roughly 29.6% against bitcoin over the past month. Resistance sits between $2,500 and $2,600, with a daily close above $2,550 the level technicians are watching, while the $2,300 to $2,400 shelf is the floor underneath. Liquidations show how quiet the day really was, with only about $7.1 million of leveraged ether positions closed out over twenty-four hours, three-quarters of them shorts.

One technical note, with a caveat attached. Bitfinex flagged on Saturday that bitcoin's weekly Super Trend indicator has flipped bullish for the first time since the downtrend began. Super Trend is a volatility band built on Average True Range, which makes it a trend-following tool: it confirms moves that already happened rather than anticipating new ones, and it flips late by design. Used as a trailing stop it does a narrow job well. Used as a forecast it will be wrong at exactly the turns that cost the most. The macro input Bitfinex cited alongside it is the more concrete one, since the Treasury doubles its long-end buybacks from September 9 through November 4, and that program starts on Wednesday.

Flows

Friday's ETF tape was the last hard data point before the weekend, and it held up better than the price did. US spot bitcoin funds took in $174.60 million net on Friday even as bitcoin slipped back below $80,000, with BlackRock's IBIT accounting for $117.38 million and Fidelity's FBTC for $57.22 million. Group trading value reached $2.95 billion and net assets closed at $101.25 billion. Over the past thirty days IBIT alone has absorbed $3.575 billion. That is a much calmer number than Thursday's $731 million single-day haul, but the direction is what counts here: allocators kept buying into a payrolls-driven selloff rather than following it out the door.

Ether funds added $26.46 million with wide dispersion underneath. BlackRock's ETHA took $57.79 million while Fidelity's FETH lost $48.30 million on the same session, which is a rotation between wrappers rather than a change in underlying exposure. HYPE funds returned to inflows with $10.52 million, all of it into Bitwise's BHYP. Solana funds lost $5.21 million and XRP funds registered no net flow at all.

The Hyperliquid disclosures

The first 13F filings covering the US Hyperliquid ETFs landed this week, and Bloomberg Intelligence analyst James Seyffart published the full holder list on Friday. Thirty firms reported positions adding up to $74.9 million as of June 30. Brazil's Wealth High Governance Asset Management led with 632,614 shares of the 21Shares fund, worth just under $24 million, followed by OLP Capital Management at $10.5 million, UBS at $7.5 million, Bank of Montreal at $6.7 million and Jane Street at $4.4 million. Discovery Capital, Brevan Howard, Balyasny and Boothbay also appear. At the other end of the table, Royal Bank of Canada reported $22,068 and Tower Research $1,103.

Read the caveats before the headline. These are second-quarter snapshots that miss any subsequent selling, bank positions can include client money rather than proprietary risk, trading firms may hold offsetting hedges, and the 13F requirement only applies above $100 million in qualifying securities, so this is a partial census rather than a full one. What it does establish is that named institutions were willing to carry a decentralized-perpetuals token on a filed ownership report. The three funds, with 21Shares first on May 12, Bitwise three days later and Grayscale on June 3, have taken $356.58 million in net inflows since launch and held $480.86 million at Friday's close. The venue itself still restricts US users, though Kraken's parent company is working with the CFTC on access to Hyperliquid-linked perpetuals through Bitnomial, which would give US customers a regulated route to the infrastructure without opening the existing exchange to them.

The privacy trade

Zcash held above $1,000 on Saturday after clearing that level on Friday for the first time since its 2016 launch, trading near $1,010 with a twenty-four-hour high of $1,046. Its $17 billion market value now ranks eleventh and sits above dogecoin. The trailing numbers are extreme, up 98% in thirty days and roughly twenty-three-fold over twelve months, from about $250 in early June through a $400 to $580 range in July and then vertical after August 21. Around $34.5 million of short positions were liquidated on Friday as open interest peaked near $2.15 billion.

The move has attracted named backers rather than anonymous momentum. Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan described three crypto positions he considers worth holding: bitcoin for currency debasement, zcash for privacy, and a long tokenization cycle running through ether, solana and uniswap. Alliance DAO's Qiao Wang said his personal crypto book holds only bitcoin and zcash. Grayscale's ZCSH, converted from a nine-year-old trust and trading on NYSE Arca since August 25, has grown from $304 million to $414.7 million in assets.

The risk framing matters more here than the return. An asset that has risen twenty-three-fold in a year does not need a catalyst to fall, and open interest above $2 billion means the same liquidation mechanics that squeezed shorts on Friday work in reverse with equal force. The 2.5% ZCSH management fee is also steep by ETF standards, which becomes a slow drag once novelty stops driving inflows. Position size is the variable an investor actually controls in a setup like this one. The price path is not.

Adoption and industry

Robinhood's tokenized-equity push crossed a real threshold. Its stock tokens now count roughly 862,800 holders against 827,200 for Binance's bStocks, according to Token Terminal, which makes it the largest issuer of tokenized stocks by holder count about two months after launch. Robinhood Chain, the company's Ethereum layer-2, saw daily volume on its Uniswap deployment reach $1.7 billion, around ten times the level of two weeks earlier, with cumulative volume past $20 billion. The chain produced 78.5% of all layer-2 revenue over the past thirty days and about $4.6 million on September 2 alone. The lesson is not that the technology won. Distribution did. A broker with an existing retail base moved that base on-chain faster than crypto-native venues have built one from scratch.

The XRP Ledger data released on Saturday tells a version of the same story with the opposite surface reading. Order-book trading averaged 3.57 million XRP a day in the second quarter, up 79% year over year, while the number of accounts placing those trades fell from over 1,860 to about 1,100, which works out to roughly 3,200 XRP per account per day against 1,070 a year earlier. Accounts transacting on the network fell 24% and new accounts fell 25%. Value held on the ledger moved the other way, with tokenized assets averaging $3.72 billion and RLUSD balances $539 million, together about $4.26 billion against $99 million six quarters earlier. Fewer participants moving much larger amounts is what institutional adoption looks like in the data, and the wider context supports that reading, since on-chain exchange volume across the whole market fell 46% year over year in the same quarter.

Southeast Asian venture funding shows a similar narrowing. Blockchain companies in the region have raised $680 million so far in 2026 across just 25 rounds, against 46 rounds last year and 206 in 2022, with a single $400 million Series D into one Singapore-based exchange accounting for close to 60% of the total. Crypto financial services took $498 million of that across 19 rounds. Singapore holds 82.5% of the region's $6.2 billion cumulative funding, and the funnel is unforgiving: of 3,957 tracked companies, 1,323 raised equity, 167 reached Series A or later, and four made it to Series D or beyond. Capital is clustering in mature businesses with revenue rather than in early-stage experiments.

Regulation and stablecoin plumbing

The Bank of Korea published a study on Saturday that deserves attention well beyond Korea. Researchers Jihyun Kim and Sangheum Cho examined what happens when a global exchange lists a direct pair between a national currency and a dollar-backed stablecoin. Market makers who supply the tokens then sell the local currency and buy dollars to balance their books, which creates a channel running from retail stablecoin demand straight into the FX market. Local stablecoin premiums fell 0.33 to 0.38 percentage points after those pairs went live, and in paired currencies stronger stablecoin buying correlated with local currency depreciation. In one test, a one-standard-deviation rise in bitcoin search interest was associated with a 0.118% depreciation of the Brazilian real. Korea, which has no direct won-stablecoin pair on that venue, showed no significant exchange-rate response, and the pressure landed in the local premium instead. Won purchases of stablecoins reached $64 billion in the twelve months through June 2025, the largest local-currency stablecoin market in Asia-Pacific, which is why the finding is not academic there.

On US policy, the National Sheriffs' Association told Senate leadership on Thursday that it is moving from opposition to neutral on the CLARITY Act, having warned in May that Section 604 would hand mixers, tumblers and DeFi platforms a blanket exemption from anti-money-laundering rules. Removing a prominent law-enforcement objection clears one obstacle ahead of a September vote, though an ethics provision that Democrats want remains unresolved, and the House scheduling its final pre-midterm votes right after the Senate returns makes enactment before November unlikely regardless.

The lighter item of the weekend carries a serious footnote. LeBron James posted a video on Saturday morning teasing a partnership with Polymarket, and the platform replied within the hour. His free-agency decision six weeks ago generated about $273 million in prediction-market volume, more than any single basketball game, and the market got the answer wrong, pricing the Philadelphia 76ers near 9% against Miami at roughly 45% before the announcement. That is a useful reminder that a liquid market with real money at stake aggregates opinion. It does not function as an oracle. Prediction markets are moving into mainstream endorsement territory faster than most people expected, and the accuracy question has not been settled by the volume.

Today's Watch

Sunday is thin by construction, and a weekend candle printed on light order books carries less information than a weekday one. The week ahead holds the substance. The Treasury's expanded long-end buyback program begins on Wednesday, September 9, which is the mechanical piece behind the bitcoin and gold correlation story that has run since late August. August CPI lands on Friday, September 11, and it matters more than it did a week ago because Friday's payrolls took the labor-market side of the Fed's mandate off the table as an easing argument. The FOMC decision follows on September 16. On policy, watch whether the sheriffs' shift moves any Senate Democrats on the CLARITY Act and whether the ethics language gets resolved. On flows, the question is whether Monday's ETF session continues the pattern of buying into weakness that Friday showed, or whether Thursday's $731 million marked the peak of this impulse.
