Daily Crypto Briefing - 2026-07-28
Good Morning Blocksignal Community,
Yesterday was a risk-on day built on relief rather than conviction. A holding US–Iran ceasefire pulled oil roughly 5% lower, which eased inflation fears and sent capital back toward risk assets. Bitcoin reclaimed the $65,000 level, Ethereum outperformed with a gain of about 4%, and a wave of short liquidations added fuel. Underneath the bounce, though, the signals stayed mixed: spot Bitcoin ETFs saw outflows late last week, sentiment readings held in fear territory, and everyone is now looking ahead to this week's Federal Reserve meeting.
Market action & drivers
Bitcoin spent the day around $64,800 to $65,500, closing roughly flat to slightly higher after reclaiming $65,000 over the weekend. Ethereum did the heavy lifting, trading near $1,950 to $1,965 and gaining about 4% on the day. Solana added a fraction to sit near $76, while XRP lagged the group and slipped toward $1.09. Total crypto market capitalization sat near $2.3 trillion on daily volume around $40 billion.
The driver came from outside crypto. A second consecutive day without fresh strikes between the United States and Iran pushed oil sharply lower and revived broad risk appetite. Falling energy prices feed directly into the inflation outlook, and a softer inflation path is exactly what rate-sensitive assets like crypto want to see. The move looked less like new buying enthusiasm and more like traders unwinding the downside hedges they had built up during the escalation.
Derivatives & on-chain
The rebound carried a clear derivatives fingerprint. More than $200 million in positions were liquidated over 24 hours, and the large majority were shorts forced to cover as price pushed higher. That is a healthier profile than a rally powered by fresh leverage from longs, but forced-cover moves can also fade quickly once the squeeze exhausts itself.
The standout on-chain read was the ETH/BTC ratio, which climbed back toward 0.030 and broke above a multi-month downtrend. Historically, Ethereum strengthening against Bitcoin has often preceded capital rotating into the broader altcoin market. It is a pattern worth watching rather than a promise: the ratio has flashed similar signals before without follow-through, so treat it as a condition to monitor, not a trade on its own. Long-term Bitcoin holders, meanwhile, continued to show little appetite for selling.
Macro & geopolitics
The geopolitical de-escalation was the day's real catalyst, but the calendar quickly shifts to monetary policy. The Federal Open Market Committee meets on July 28 and 29, with the statement due July 29. The base case is a hold at the current 3.50%–3.75% range, though markets are pricing a 25% to 30% chance of a hike, and the stronger consensus for any move points to September. Worth remembering: a hold is not automatically bullish. With parts of the market still hoping for cuts, holding steady reinforces the higher-for-longer backdrop that has weighed on crypto for much of the year.
Adoption & industry
Institutional flows sent a split message. Spot Bitcoin ETFs logged more than $465 million in outflows over the final two days of last week, a reminder that institutional demand remains fragile. Zoom out slightly, though, and combined spot ETFs across Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and XRP still pulled in roughly $152 million in net weekly inflows.
The industry-structure story stayed grim. BitMart announced it will wind down after nearly nine years, following recent exit plans from BitMEX and AscendEX, and Storj Labs filed for Chapter 11 to restructure legacy debt while keeping operations running. Some traders read a cluster of exchange closures as classic late-bear-market capitulation that precedes a bottom; that is a plausible historical rhythm, but it is just as easily read as ongoing stress from thin liquidity. On the demand side, Ethereum treasury company Bitmine Immersion Technologies added to its ETH position, while Strategy went a fourth straight week without buying Bitcoin as it builds cash ahead of earnings.
Regulation
Washington remains the file to watch. Reports suggest a final version of the CLARITY Act could surface this week, with industry voices urging the Senate to move, though procedural hurdles still stand in the way. In Europe, the MiCA framework is now fully in force across all 27 member states: Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, and Bitpanda are operating with licenses, while Binance remains shut out of the EU after failing to secure authorization. The through-line is a widening gap between platforms that cleared regulatory bars and those that did not.
Today's Watch
The FOMC meeting is the anchor. The decision lands July 29, so expect positioning and lighter conviction into it, with the statement's tone on inflation and the path of rates mattering more than the near-certain hold itself. Keep an eye on whether the ETH/BTC breakout extends or fades, on any renewed Bitcoin ETF flows after last week's outflows, and on CLARITY Act headlines out of the Senate. A hint of an announcement from Strategy is also floating around, so watch that space.
