Daily Crypto Briefing - 2026-06-30
Good Morning Blocksignal Community,
Executive Summary
Monday was quiet on the screen and loud in the data. Bitcoin opened near 59,500 and drifted slightly higher through the US morning, the kind of flat session that says less about demand returning and more about sellers pausing for breath. Underneath that calm, three threads defined the day. US spot Bitcoin ETFs were set to close out their worst month since launch, with June redemptions confirmed at a record level. The second quarter was ending in the red for both Bitcoin and Ether, a back-to-back losing first half that breaks a long-standing seasonal pattern. And the macro backdrop that has driven the whole month, a firm dollar, a hawkish Fed and capital chasing AI hardware, stayed exactly where it was.
Market Action
Bitcoin opened at 59,496 on Monday, about 0.7 percent below Sunday's open, then recovered to roughly 59,800 by mid-morning in New York. That leaves it down close to 6 percent on the week, near 19 percent on the month and around 45 percent on the year, and still far below the 126,198 record set in October 2025. Ether told a similar story with a softer monthly drop, opening at 1,570 and ticking up to about 1,573, off roughly 8 percent on the week and 22 percent on the month.
The pattern under the majors has not changed. Bitcoin keeps holding up better than the rest of the market while anything higher on the risk curve falls faster. Over the past week Ether, Dogecoin and Hyperliquid's HYPE all posted double-digit losses, while Solana near 70 and Tron proved more resilient. XRP held around 1.04 to 1.06 with volume picking up, one of the few large caps to find steady bids. Sentiment stayed pinned near the bottom of the fear range, the kind of reading that has marked local lows before but offers no timing on its own.
Flows and Positioning
The clearest signal of the day came from the ETF tape. US spot Bitcoin funds recorded 4.06 billion dollars in net outflows for June, the largest monthly redemption since the products launched in January 2024, surpassing the previous record of 3.56 billion set in February 2025. The week of June 22 to 26 alone accounted for 1.79 billion of that, and BlackRock's IBIT made up roughly 73 percent of the month's withdrawals.
The structural read matters more than the headline number. Glassnode co-founder Rafael Schultze-Kraft noted that ETFs shed about 71,600 Bitcoin over the past month while long-term accumulation addresses added only 7,500. Adjusted for newly mined supply, combined flows came to roughly negative 77,000 Bitcoin. In plain terms, the wrappers that powered the last leg higher are now adding to supply rather than absorbing it, which is part of why oversold bounces this month have struggled to hold. Ether ETFs extended their run too, with a seventh straight week of outflows. Newer products went the other way, as XRP and HYPE funds took in fresh capital, a small sign that rotation within crypto is still alive even as the headline assets bleed.
Macro and the Quarter
None of the drivers changed on Monday, which is part of the story. The dollar sat near a seven-month high, the Federal Reserve under Chair Kevin Warsh has held a firmer line on rates, and the AI buildout kept pulling speculative capital toward semiconductor and memory-chip names. Bitcoin has spent the month trading like a high-beta risk asset rather than a hedge, moving with the Nasdaq instead of against it.
That backdrop set up an unusual quarter-end. With two days left, Bitcoin was on course to finish the second quarter down about 12 percent after a 22 percent first-quarter drop, only the third time in its history that it has opened a year with back-to-back losing quarters. The last time that happened, the market was in the depths of the 2022 bear. Ether fared worse, down roughly 25 percent in the quarter on top of a 29 percent first-quarter fall. The second quarter has historically been one of Bitcoin's stronger stretches, so a red one breaks the seasonal script and leaves traders asking whether the weakness carries into the back half.
Today's Watch
The quarter formally closes today, so expect quarter-end positioning and a fresh set of monthly performance prints that will frame how the second half of the year opens. The single most useful tell remains the ETF tape: until daily flows turn from outflow to inflow, strength is better read as relief than as a bottom. Watch whether Bitcoin can hold the 58,000 to 60,000 zone, with a clean break lower risking forced selling and a reclaim of the low 60s suggesting the flush is working through. Beyond the chart, the dollar and the AI-driven equity tape stay the dominant short-term drivers, and the next Federal Reserve checkpoint in late July is the next scheduled macro event worth tracking. As always, this is market commentary, not investment advice.
