Crypto Basics #11 — Understanding Solana (SOL)

Solana is a blockchain built around one priority: speed. Where some networks focus on being maximally decentralized or maximally secure, Solana was designed to process a very high number of transactions quickly and cheaply.

It does this with an unusual combination. Like Ethereum, it uses proof of stake to secure the network. On top of that, it adds a mechanism called proof of history, which lets the network agree on the order of transactions more efficiently. The result is a chain that can handle thousands of transactions per second, with fees that are usually a tiny fraction of a cent.

That performance has made Solana a popular home for applications where speed and low cost matter, including decentralized exchanges, NFT projects, and consumer crypto apps. It's often described as one of the main scalable alternatives to Ethereum.

Like any design, it involves trade-offs. Running a network this fast places higher demands on the computers that operate it, and Solana has had network outages in its history. Speed is its strength and also the thing it has to keep proving.

In short: Solana is a high-speed, low-fee blockchain that competes with Ethereum by prioritizing transaction throughput.
